Dark, elegant, and drawn from one of the most extraordinary scientific books of the nineteenth century.

This book clutch is adapted from the remarkable 1820 first-edition binding of Friedrich Christian Accum’s A Treatise on Adulterations of Food, and Culinary Poisons, published in London by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown. The original book was an important early exposé of the dangerous adulteration of everyday foods and beverages.

Its unforgettable binding was every bit as dramatic as its subject. Entwined serpents form the elaborate border, while a solitary spider sits at the center of an immense web. The original cover also carried a skull-and-crossbones and the ominous warning “There is death in the pot.”

For the clutch, this extraordinary historic ornament has been reimagined in black and antique gold, with the shortened title A Treatise on Poison incorporated into the design. Fine serpentine linework surrounds the cover while the delicate web radiates from its tiny central spider, creating a composition that is macabre without ever losing its refinement.

The result feels less like conventional Gothic merchandise than an object discovered in an old scientific library: mysterious, beautifully elaborate, and just a little dangerous.

For collectors of unusual books, antique scientific illustration, Gothic design, and wonderfully strange pieces of history, the A Treatise on Poison Book Clutch turns an unforgettable 1820 binding into a statement accessory more than two centuries later.
