Butterflies, moths, caterpillars, flowers and curling foliage surround the central title panel in a dense ornamental composition adapted from an antique decorative book cover. Brilliant touches of rust orange, powder blue, butter yellow, cream and burgundy emerge against an unusual olive-green ground, while the black title cartouche and fine gold lettering give the piece the character of an elaborate Victorian volume.

The imagery is particularly fitting for Stainton’s celebrated study of British Lepidoptera. Delicate wings, botanical details and tiny metamorphosing caterpillars create the feeling of a nineteenth-century naturalist’s collection brought to life across the surface of the book.
