A wonderfully sinister piece of early twentieth-century book design, transformed into a darkly elegant book clutch.

The design is adapted from an extraordinary 1914 binding created by Karl Ebert for Das unheimliche Buch, a German anthology of supernatural and uncanny stories edited by Felix Schloemp. Published in Munich by Georg Müller, the collection brought together strange and unsettling fiction by some of the era’s most celebrated writers, accompanied by illustrations from the visionary Austrian artist Alfred Kubin.

For this edition, the German title has been reimagined as Eerie Tales, while the remarkable imagery of the historic binding remains at the heart of the design.

Against a smoky charcoal ground, a great black bat spreads its wings beneath a field of antique-gold stars, carrying a horned skull entwined by a serpent. Tiny touches of muted green, bone and oxblood emerge from the otherwise restrained palette, giving the image the appearance of an enigmatic object discovered in an old European library.

The reverse is dominated by a vast golden spiderweb, with a solitary dark red spider poised at its center. Together, the bat, stars, serpent and web create an atmosphere that is eerie rather than theatrical-macabre imagery rendered with the refinement of historic bookbinding.

The original 1914 anthology included supernatural and uncanny fiction by writers including Edgar Allan Poe, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Gustav Meyrink, Heinrich Mann and Ivan Turgenev, making its strange binding an appropriately haunting introduction to the stories within.
