Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Book Clutch

A fantastical literary classic reimagined as an extravagant nineteenth-century decorative binding.

This richly ornamented book clutch takes its visual language directly from nineteenth-century French cartonnage, adapting period examples of elaborate gilt framework, scrolling ivory ornament, decorative medallions, and brilliant colored grounds into a new composition created for Alice.

Set against a deep crimson field, the intricate cartonnage-inspired framework surrounds a gallery of scenes and characters drawn from the original illustrations created for Lewis Carroll’s Alice books. Alice, the Mad Hatter, March Hare, Cheshire Cat, Queen of Hearts, White Rabbit, Caterpillar, Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee appear within ornamental cartouches and pictorial panels, giving the clutch the appearance of an exceptionally lavish antique illustrated volume.

At the center of the front is the famous Mad Tea Party, surrounded by smaller character portraits incorporated into the elaborate nineteenth-century framework. The reverse continues the story with Alice and the Caterpillar at its center, accompanied by another collection of Wonderland’s curious inhabitants.

The spine completes the illusion of an antique book, with ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND - BY LEWIS CARROLL presented in gold against deep red and enclosed within period-inspired decorative panels.

Rather than creating a modern Alice motif and giving it an antique finish, this design begins with the visual vocabulary of actual nineteenth-century French decorative books and brings Carroll’s original illustrated world into it.

The result is part book, part fashion object, and part miniature work of decorative art-a collector’s piece for admirers of antique bindings, literary illustration, and the wonderfully strange world of Lewis Carroll.
