One of Alphonse Mucha’s most celebrated Art Nouveau designs, transformed into a richly detailed book clutch.

Created in 1896, Mucha’s Zodiac was originally designed as a calendar for the Parisian printer F. Champenois. Its extraordinary design soon caught the attention of Léon Deschamps, editor of the influential French arts journal La Plume, which acquired the rights to issue it as the magazine’s calendar for 1897.

At its center is Mucha’s regal woman surrounded by a celestial halo containing the twelve signs of the zodiac. Cascades of golden hair, elaborate jewels, stars, flowers and intricate ornamental borders create the sumptuous decorative world that made Mucha one of the defining artists of the Art Nouveau period.

The clutch preserves the magnificent detail and jewel-like palette of the original lithograph, framed by deep olive and accented with midnight blue, crimson, ivory and gold. The historic LA PLUME lettering remains part of the composition, connecting the design to the Parisian journal that helped bring Mucha’s work to an international audience.
