This book clutch is adapted from The Alphabet of Flowers and Fruit, a beautifully illustrated children’s book published in London by Dean & Son around 1856. The original belongs to the richly decorative world of mid-Victorian color printing, when even small books could be transformed into elaborate objects of art.

Against a dramatic black ground, flowers, berries, foliage and fruit surround the ornate period lettering in deep crimson, green and antique gold. A tiny bird hidden among the branches adds to the peculiar charm of the composition, while the original Dean & Son publisher details remain part of the historic design.

The dark palette gives the exuberant botanical imagery an unexpectedly sophisticated character-romantic and distinctly Victorian, but far removed from the sweetness of conventional floral accessories.
