Down the rabbit hole, by way of one of the most beautiful early twentieth-century editions of Lewis Carroll’s classic.

This book clutch is adapted from the wonderfully decorative 1907 John Lane edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, illustrated by W. H. Walker and published in London by John Lane, The Bodley Head, with the John Lane Company in New York.

At the center of the historic pictorial binding stands the White Rabbit as herald, dressed in his elaborate court costume and carrying the scroll and trumpet from the Knave of Hearts’ trial. He is framed by heart-emblazoned card figures, stylized roses, tassels and fine architectural ornament, while the title appears dramatically against a deep red panel above him.

The extraordinary muted palette-dusty blue-green, crimson, ivory, black and antique gold-gives the design the character of a treasured Edwardian volume rather than a modern interpretation of Wonderland. Fine period linework and slightly eccentric figures preserve the peculiar charm of the original 1907 binding.

Walker’s edition contained eight color plates and forty-two additional illustrations, offering a distinctive visual interpretation of Carroll’s Wonderland at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Reimagined as a book clutch, the historic cover becomes an elegant celebration of one of literature’s most famous journeys: recognizable at once, but far removed from the familiar modern imagery of Alice.
