The design depicts Alice beneath the great tree of Wonderland, gazing upward at the Cheshire Cat as he grins down from the branches. Dressed in deep rose red and surrounded by softly colored woodland, Alice appears small against the twisting tree and watchful cat-a beautifully strange rendering of one of the most famous scenes in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The illustration is framed like a color plate from an old illustrated volume, with a warm parchment ground set against a deep burgundy binding. Muted sage greens, faded blue, black linework and touches of crimson give the cover the richness of an antique book while allowing Alice’s dress and the Cheshire Cat to command the composition.

Unlike brighter modern interpretations of Wonderland, this design preserves the slightly mysterious atmosphere of early illustrated editions. The Cat is not cute or cartoonish, but wonderfully peculiar; Alice, seen from behind with her hands clasped, seems to have wandered into a world that is beautiful, unfamiliar and not entirely trustworthy.
